Overview
The name Kuari translates to “the doorway” — a fitting title for a trek that opens up to some of the most spectacular Himalayan panoramas in Uttarakhand. Popularly known as the Curzon Trail (after Lord Curzon, who explored this route), the Kuari Pass Trek stands at 12,750 ft and offers an unforgettable combination of forest trails, ridge walks, and grand mountain views.
The trek winds through untouched oak, rhododendron, and deodar forests, occasionally opening into wide meadows and clearings blanketed in snow during winter. The trail is known for its ever-changing scenery — quiet villages, deep valleys, sparkling streams, and high-altitude campsites tucked between ancient trees.
From Kuari Pass, you get a legendary 180° Himalayan skyline featuring peaks like:
Nanda Devi
Dronagiri
Trishul
Hathi–Ghodi Parvat
Kamet
Bertholi
Mana
Neelkanth
Whether you’re a first-time trekker or a seasoned hiker looking for inspiration, Kuari Pass is an excellent choice. The best time to trek is December–March, when the trail turns into a snowy wonderland.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Haridwar → Joshimath (Drive)
Meet in Haridwar and start the beautiful drive to Joshimath. The route follows the Alaknanda River, passing Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag.
Reach Joshimath by evening and settle into your guesthouse or hotel. Rest well for the trek ahead.
Day 2: Joshimath → Dhak → Gulling Campsite
After breakfast, drive to Dhak Village, the starting point of the trek.
The initial trail passes through rocky paths and small Himalayan settlements like Tugashi. Here, you’ll get a glimpse into the daily life of mountain villagers.
A gradual climb leads into enchanting oak and rhododendron forests. Meadows and open patches appear between the trees until you finally reach Gulling Campsite, surrounded by thick oak forest. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 3: Gulling → Tali Campsite
Today, trek through dense oak forests with occasional clearings until you reach the serene Tali campsite.
Though the ascent is moderate, the changing landscapes and quiet forest canopy make it a beautiful walk. Hot meals and warm drinks welcome you at the campsite. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 4: Tali → Kuari Pass → Return to Tali
This is the most rewarding day of the trek. Start early and climb gently through forest openings and snow slopes (during winter).
After 3–4 hours, you reach Kuari Pass, where an unforgettable Himalayan panorama awaits. Peaks such as Nanda Devi, Neelkanth, Chaukhamba, Dronagiri, Hathi–Ghodi, Kamet, and Trishul rise dramatically on the horizon.
Spend time enjoying the views, taking photos, and soaking in the high-altitude silence before retracing your steps back to Tali.
Day 5: Tali → Dhak → Joshimath
Wake up early to watch the sunrise over snow-covered mountains. After breakfast, descend to Dhak village.
At Dhak, board your vehicle for the short drive back to Joshimath. Spend the night relaxing in your hotel.
